• All of the glucosamine forms originated from shellfish, and has been shown since the first clinical studies in 1980 to be effective at easing discomfort associated with arthritis - at least - if not more effectively than common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as Ibuprofen or Aspirin. Glucosamine sulfate also has very few side effects in comparison to NSAIDS. Glucosamine (an amino sugar and a prominent precursor in the biochemical synthesis of glycosylated proteins and lipids) provides joint building proteoglycans.
• Chondroitin sulfate consists of repeating chains of molecules called glycosaminoglycans. Chondroitin sulfate is a mucopolysaccharide found in cartilage, tendons and ligaments, where it is bound to proteins such as collagen and elastin. In joints, it contributes to strength, flexibility and shock absorption. Current research indicates that supplemental chondroitin sulfate may help maintain proper joint function. Chondroitin sulfate is a major constituent of cartilage providing structure, increased capacity to hold water and nutrients, and allowing other molecules to move through cartilage, an important property, as there is no blood supply to cartilage. Chondroitin may work by acting as a building block for proteoglycan molecules, and may also have anti-inflammatory properties. • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a water-soluble vitamin, which is necessary in the body to form collagen in bones, cartilage, muscle, and blood vessels and aids in the absorption of iron. • Manganese is predominantly stored in the bones, liver, kidney, and pancreas. It aids in the formation of connective tissue, bones, blood-clotting factors, and sex hormones and plays a role in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, calcium absorption, and blood sugar regulation.
